Church Mission/Vision Statement:

Our mission, to which we believe God has called us within Christ’s Great Commission, is to inspire people to become wholehearted followers of His. Our vision in pursuit of this mission is to be a vibrant, Christ-centered community of faith who lives in grace, practices gratitude, and extends generosity. We value: Authenticity, Hospitality, Outreach, Celebration, and Innovation. In all that we are, and all that we do, we seek to glorify the name of Jesus as we reflect the image of God through these simple statements and values that further define us as the people of God in this place at this time in human history.

Tasks, expectations, duties, supervision, assignments, and responsibilities for the position:

The co-pastors of San Clemente Presbyterian Church will exemplify servant leadership, demonstrate humble spirits, and exude a passion for sharing Christ’s love with our church and the community. Both co-pastors will serve together on all major committees, and share leadership responsibilities for worship, property management, church finances, and staff and lay leader development.

Our collaborative leaders will also possess an awareness of their own God-given strengths and talents and have the ability to assess those in others. Accordingly, the co-pastors will work with one another, and in consultation with the PNC and session, to prioritize and balance the remainder of church responsibilities among themselves and in partnership with staff, deacons and other lay leaders. These duties include fostering multi-generational engagement through family programming, VBS, camps, and events. Inspiring spiritual growth and personal transformation by overseeing educational programs, managing communications, leading adult education, Bible studies, and spiritual formation. Together, they will provide or otherwise facilitate compassionate pastoral care, engage in visitations, home communion, weddings, and memorials. They will actively participate in community outreach, ecumenical relations, and presbytery collaboration, developing mission strategies and partnerships to serve and uplift those in need – all while honoring the direction of the church session and congregation.

MDP Narratives

Q1: How would you describe the congregation's/organization's specific vision for ministry? How will this vision impact the community? Is the congregation part of a ministry vision or program? How would you describe the congregation's/organization's specific vision for ministry?

The vision of SCPC is to be a vibrant Christ-centered community of faith, who lives in grace, practices gratitude and extends generosity with each other, the surrounding community, and the world. SCPC is a welcoming, multi-generational church, with a focus on worshiping God together, allowing God to meet us where we are in our faith through the Holy Spirit. We grow in our faith as we encounter Christ through Biblical teaching and as we share life together.

We are an outward looking church focused on bringing people to Christ, with a strategic emphasis on youth and families. However, our spiritual growth is not for ourselves alone, but we seek to be a community for the community, actively sharing the love, grace, and mercy that Christ has shown us.

Our dedication to community service and outreach, both locally and abroad, exemplifies our outward focus and generous spirit. By caring for each other and sharing the love of Christ with everyone, we witness to the world our unity and commitment to embody love and civility in all our interactions.

As a result of this vision, the community will experience firsthand what it means to be loved by Christ. We will become a living testament of the fruits of the spirit that attracts people by demonstrating Christ’s love and living as examples of his teaching.

Q2: What is the nature and context of the community in which your congregation lives out its mission/vision? How will you address the emerging needs that are impacting your community?

Our congregation lives our mission of leading others to life in Christ in the context of a south Orange County beach town. San Clemente Pres has been a cornerstone of our town for 90 years, impacting generations of families locally and from nearby communities. We are a diverse community with new and long-term residents and deep ties to our “Spanish Village-by-the-Sea” heritage.

We are passionately committed to sharing Christ’s love with everyone. Our ocean-view patio is a place of welcome following worship and our campus is utilized by community groups during the week. Our church’s Las Olas Preschool, serves over 100 families with excellent, Christ-centered education and care. Our long-term, committed outreach ministries are dedicated to supporting the needs of our community through partnerships such as Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), our adopted Marine Corps battalion at Camp Pendleton, and Mexico mission partner Campo Esperanza providing support and care for itinerant farm workers and their families.

Our Mission Study identified numerous community issues and needs, some society-wide like homelessness, high housing costs, a desire for more tolerance and less division, and the need for social justice advocacy and programs and others more uniquely local, such as, a declining sense of community. We seek co-pastors to guide our congregation and engage with community leadership to proactively address the needs identified in our Mission Study while helping us spread the love of Christ.

Q3: How will this call help complement the responsibilities of other staff/volunteer positions, and the life of the congregation/organization, so that you may accomplish your short and long-term goals for ministry?

After much prayer and reflection, we feel led by the Holy Spirit to call two co-pastors to serve our congregation and community. They will provide collaborative leadership while complementing the efforts and cultivating the spiritual and professional growth of our dedicated staff. They will also support and foster our laity to lead in ministry.

The co-pastors will co-chair all major committees, lead worship services, provide pastoral care, oversee educational programs, and personally engage in community and Missions outreach. This enables balance in the sharing of responsibilities, as well as, blessing our congregation and community with the strengths, gifts and encouragement of two pastors.

Additionally, the co-pastor model will provide stability and continuity in leadership of our church as we seek to serve and inspire people to become wholehearted followers of Jesus. Consistency and continuity of leadership is vital for our long-term goals of serving our community. The co-pastor model aligns with ideals of our congregation, Session and staff because we seek humble and collaborative servant-leaders. We seek co-pastors who will be visible in the local community, help support the strategic use of our church campus and increase engagement in our multi-generational congregation.

Q4: Provide a description of the skills, gifts, and training the person you hope will become a part of your ministry must have, to lead the congregation towards the vision and mission established.

We seek two co-pastors with strong affinities for servant leadership, humble spirits, and a passion for sharing Christ’s love with our church and the community.
